  About Us

This website was conceived by John Miller, director of newspaper journalism at Ryerson. It stems from his belief that ignorance, not racism, is mainly responsible for the stereotypical coverage of visible minorities in the Canadian media.

The site is unique in Canada because it uses journalistic resources to examine news coverage of several ethnocultural and religious communities, and because it offers practical help—background, sources, and story ideas—to assist journalists who want to achieve better coverage of diversity.

Diversity Watch is the product of Miller's 10 years of research and teaching in the area of diversity reporting. That research is on-line at: http://www.media-awareness.ca/eng/issues/minrep/default.html

Miller is former deputy managing editor of the Toronto Star and served for three years as head of the diversity committee of the Canadian Daily Newspaper Association. He helped that organization rewrite its Statement of Principles in 1995, enshrining "a representative picture of its diverse communities" as an editorial goal for all Canadian newspapers.

In 1997, Miller established a course in covering diversity as mandatory for all undergraduate journalism students at Ryerson.
